TAFE stands for Technical and Further Education.
TAFE is a government-owned and nationally operated system of colleges offering qualifications that are recognized and transferable internationally. The focus in TAFE is on hands-on, practical training with key competencies worked into every course that are thought to be essential for people entering the workforce. Courses are developed in consultation with business and industry to ensure the skills are relevant and in demand.
While university teaches a broad range of theories, TAFE focuses on specific skills for a particular workplace. For example, a Certificate IV in Aged Care teaches all the skills needed to work in aged care – either at a client’s home or an aged care facility.
TAFE is usually taught at TAFE Institutes around Australia, although an increasing number of courses are available online.
Studying at TAFE also provides a pathway to university education where Diploma graduates can receive up to one or two year's credit towards a related university degree, through a system of credit transfer arrangements established with universities across Australia.
To ensure that students get the most out of their study experience TAFE colleges also offer a broad range of student support services. From orientation and activity programs to assistance with housing and counseling, TAFE colleges aim to offer a secure and supportive environment to all students.
What is VET
TAFE is just one part of VET (Vocational Education and Training). VET covers all vocational training in Australia. While TAFEs are run by the government, there are also similar institutions run by private businesses. They’re called things like colleges, training providers, or course providers.
There’s not that much difference between TAFEs and private providers – both offer courses online and on-campus, and they’re both quality-controlled by the government’s Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA).
TAFE Queensland offers an extensive range of education and training programs.
TAFE programs range from areas as diverse as arts and entertainment, tourism and hospitality, fashion, business and community services to automotive, engineering, science and technology and building and construction.TAFE Queensland is the largest, most experienced provider of vocational education, training and adult learning in Queensland. TAFE programs are highly focused to ensure you learn industry relevant skills to help get you into the workplace faster, upgrade existing skills, or prepare for further study.
